AC Running but Not Cooling? What to Check First

An air conditioner can sound normal and still fail to move enough heat out of the home. A few safe observations can help you describe the problem clearly and may reveal a simple airflow or thermostat issue.

01

Confirm the thermostat setting

Set the thermostat to cooling, choose a temperature below the current room temperature, and confirm the fan is set to Auto unless you intentionally want continuous airflow.

02

Check airflow at several vents

Compare airflow in multiple rooms. Weak airflow throughout the house can point to a dirty filter, a blower problem, blocked return air, or another system restriction.

03

Inspect the filter

If the filter is visibly loaded and you know the correct replacement size and direction, replace it. Do not operate the system without a filter.

04

Look at the outdoor unit from a safe distance

Do not open panels. Note whether the fan is running, whether the coil is blocked by debris, and whether you see ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor equipment.

05

Stop if the system is icing

Continued operation can make icing worse. Turn cooling off, leave the fan setting as directed by your service professional, and schedule a diagnosis rather than trying to chip or melt ice.

This guide provides general educational information. Equipment, homes, and safety conditions vary. Do not open equipment panels, bypass safety controls, or perform work beyond your training.
